Calculation method

Backing dimensions equal the quilt dimensions plus twice the overhang. The number of backing panels is based on usable width; panel seam allowances are not automatically included, so add them to your cutting plan. Binding length is the quilt perimeter plus an extra allowance, converted to strips and total strip length.

This is a planning estimate. Very large quilts may need multiple backing panels, and directional prints, fabric shrinkage, seam take-up and preferred overhang can change the purchase amount.
