How MaterialYardage Calculates Material Quantities

Our calculators turn dimensions into estimated material quantities using standard geometric formulas, typical bulk densities and clearly stated ordering assumptions.

1. Calculate the physical volume

For a rectangular area, volume is length × width × depth. When dimensions are entered in feet and inches, the depth is converted to feet before calculating cubic feet.

Cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27 Cubic meters = cubic feet × 0.0283168

2. Convert volume to weight when appropriate

Bulk materials such as gravel, soil and mulch can be estimated by multiplying volume by an approximate bulk density. Density changes with moisture, grading, compaction and product composition, so weight figures are estimates rather than supplier-certified weights.

Estimated tons = cubic yards × assumed tons per cubic yard

3. Account for bags and retail units

Bag counts use the stated bag volume or product yield. Results are rounded up because partial bags are normally not practical to order.

4. Ordering allowance

Projects can need extra material because of settling, uneven ground, cutting, spillage, compaction or measurement uncertainty. Where an allowance is provided, the calculator applies it after calculating the net requirement.

Order quantity = net quantity × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Important limitations

  • Results are planning estimates, not engineering specifications.
  • Supplier product yields and densities can differ from the assumptions used here.
  • For structural concrete, foundations and load-bearing work, follow project drawings, local codes and qualified professional advice.
  • Always confirm final quantities, bag yields, delivery limits and product specifications with your supplier.
