Gravel & Road Base Calculator Guide
This estimator helps convert aggregate dimensions into cubic yards and approximate weight for gravel, crushed stone and road-base materials.
How the estimate works
Calculate rectangular volume first, then multiply cubic yards by the selected bulk-density assumption to estimate tons. Density is approximate because aggregate moisture, grading and compaction affect delivered weight.
Important assumptions
- Use the supplier's density or delivered weight information when available.
- Driveways and compacted base courses may require a design-specific thickness and compaction allowance.
- Do not assume all gravel products have the same tons-per-yard value.

How accurate is the tonnage?
It is an estimate based on an assumed bulk density. Actual delivered weight can differ.
Should I add waste?
A modest ordering allowance can cover grading, uneven subgrade and handling losses. Compacted base work may need a separate compaction consideration.
Can this calculate a driveway?
Yes for a preliminary rectangular estimate. Split irregular driveways into sections for better accuracy.
