MaterialYardage publishes free calculators and reference guides for estimating landscaping and construction materials — topsoil, mulch, gravel and related aggregates.

Who runs this site

MaterialYardage.com is an independent website created and maintained by [Siva Kumar], based in [india]. The site was launched in <2026>[YEAR] after repeatedly running into the same problem on home and garden projects: material is quoted in cubic yards, but nobody measures a garden in cubic yards, and the quick answers available online rarely explain where the number comes from or how much to add for settling.

The site is not affiliated with any material supplier, landscaping company or retailer. We do not sell materials, take commissions on suppliers, or accept payment for recommending a product or brand. The site is supported by advertising, which is kept separate from the content and has no influence on what is published.

What the calculators are designed to do

Each calculator answers one practical question: how much material do I need to buy? To be useful it has to do three things.

Every calculator page pairs the tool with a written guide covering recommended depths, worked examples, differences between material types, how much to allow for settling, and the questions that come up most often. The calculator is a convenience; the guidance around it is what makes the number usable.

What the calculators deliberately do not do is quote prices. Material and delivery costs vary enormously by region and season, and a price published today would be misleading within months.

How MaterialYardage calculates material requirements

MaterialYardage calculators use the dimensions entered by the user to calculate volume. Imperial measurements are converted to cubic feet and cubic yards, while metric measurements are calculated in cubic meters. Material-specific density values are used only when an estimated weight is requested.

Volume

All volume figures come from the same geometric calculation, performed entirely in the visitor's browser. No measurement is transmitted to a server.

The divisor of 27 is exact: a cubic yard is three feet on each side. The cubic meter conversion factor derives from the international yard of exactly 0.9144 meters and is applied at full precision internally, with results rounded only for display.

Bag counts

Bag counts are calculated by dividing the total volume in cubic feet by the nominal bag size in cubic feet, then rounding up to the next whole bag. Bag volumes are nominal figures printed by the manufacturer; settled contents may differ slightly.

Weight

Estimated weights multiply the calculated volume in cubic yards by a representative bulk density for the selected material, expressed in US short tons per cubic yard. The values used are mid-range working figures drawn from the ranges commonly quoted by landscape-material suppliers:

Because natural materials vary in density, moisture content, particle size, compaction and settling, weight calculations are estimates rather than guaranteed delivered weights. Moisture is the largest single variable: the same material can differ substantially in weight between a dry week and a wet one. Where a supplier publishes a density figure for the specific product you are buying, their figure should take precedence over ours.

Ordering allowances

Where a calculator suggests an ordering allowance, it applies a straightforward percentage uplift to the calculated volume. These allowances are rules of thumb intended to cover settling, compaction and uneven ground, not engineering specifications. Projects with structural requirements — retaining walls, load-bearing bases, drainage design — should follow a specification from a qualified professional rather than a general-purpose estimate.

Rounding

Volumes and weights are displayed to two decimal places. Bag counts are always rounded up, since partial bags cannot be purchased. Calculations are carried out at full floating-point precision and rounded only at the point of display, so the figures shown may differ in the last decimal place from hand calculations using the rounded intermediate values.

How our content is written and reviewed

Guidance published on this site is written for a general audience carrying out residential landscaping and home-improvement work. Depth recommendations, coverage figures and material descriptions reflect standard practice as published by landscape-material suppliers and horticultural extension resources, and are presented as typical ranges rather than as prescriptions, because regional practice varies.

Pages are reviewed when a calculator changes, when a reader reports an error, and periodically as part of routine maintenance. Where a figure is an approximation, we say so on the page rather than presenting it as exact.

This site provides general information for planning purposes. It is not professional engineering, horticultural or construction advice, and quantities should be confirmed with your supplier or contractor before ordering.

Reporting an error

If a calculation looks wrong, a figure disagrees with what your supplier quotes, or something on a page is unclear, please tell us. Corrections are genuinely welcome — a calculator that returns the wrong number is worse than no calculator at all.
