Common mulch depth ranges

| Light refresh | 1–2 in | Useful where an existing mulch layer remains. |
| General landscape beds | 2–3 in | A common range for a new or refreshed layer. |
| Deeper organic layer | 3–4 in | Use care around stems and trunks. |
Mulch quantity formula
Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27
For irregular beds, split the space into rectangles or other simple sections and add the results.
Bulk vs bags
Bulk mulch is usually quoted by cubic yard while retail mulch is sold by bag volume. Check the actual bag volume printed on the package before converting.
