Paver Calculator Guide: Area, Quantity and Waste
Paver quantity starts with finished surface area and the face area of one paver. The final order should include a cutting and breakage allowance appropriate to the pattern.
Calculate the surface area
For a rectangular patio, multiply length by width. For an irregular patio, split it into simple shapes and add their areas.
Calculate paver count
Use consistent units for the patio and paver dimensions. Divide project area by the face area of one paver, then apply a waste allowance.
Order quantity = required pavers × (1 + waste allowance)
Waste depends on pattern
Running bond, diagonal, herringbone and border layouts can have very different cutting requirements. More complex patterns generally need more planning allowance.
Other materials
Paver count does not automatically determine bedding sand, jointing material, base aggregate or edge restraint. Calculate those separately from the project design.
